LEADERSHIP
The idea that leaders can naturally emerge, from anyone, anytime, may be counter-intuitive.
We are programmed by our society to believe that leaders are highly accomplished, and the term “leader” is reserved for Very Important People. When we hear the word “leader” most people think of presidents of nations or CEOs of companies. Even the dictionary definition of a leader is “the person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country.”
This definition of leadership is very limiting, for it implies that leadership is reserved for only a few. It may even make you think that you are not a leader because you are not important enough, powerful enough, or simply…. enough. We have been taught that leadership is something that we eventually get to at some future point in time… it’s always out of reach. We look up to those people widely agreed upon by society to be leaders and we say, “one day, I will be a leader like that.”
Having this idea of leadership as a place you get to, one day strips all of us from experiencing ourselves as leaders right now.
